By Kimberly Hardcastle-Geddes, CEM | Chief Strategist | Freeman

When I enrolled in the CEM Learning Program, I wasn’t yet the president of mdg (prior to my current position with Freeman). But I was already committed to building a career in the exhibitions and events industry, and I wanted to learn everything I could about it. With several years of work experience, a Master of Science in Business Administration and a strong foundation in marketing strategy, I understood how to promote events. What I wanted next was a deeper understanding of how they’re built.

At mdg, A Freeman Company, we help organizers grow attendance, amplify impact, and build brand affinity. But early on, I realized that to be the kind of partner our clients truly needed, I had to see the bigger picture. I didn’t need to become an operations expert, but I wanted to understand the environment in which my marketing strategies were being applied.

One of the four P’s of marketing is product, and in our world, that product is the event. The CEM Program helped me better understand that product – how it’s planned, structured, executed, and evaluated. From logistics and contracts to budgeting and risk management, I gained practical insights that enhanced my ability to collaborate and consult more effectively.

Just as valuable was the experience of learning alongside other professionals in the industry. The discussions, shared challenges, and perspectives of my peers made the journey richer and reminded me that continued growth is a team sport. That network has stayed with me and continues to shape how I lead and learn.

Now, as president of mdg and a CEM Faculty member, I have the privilege of supporting others on their own professional journeys. The CEM designation gave me a broader lens through which to view our industry and made me a more strategic, well-rounded leader.

If you’re wondering whether the CEM is worth the time, especially if you already have significant experience or education, my answer is absolutely. It’s not just a credential. It’s a deeper dive into the world we work in every day. It bridges gaps, strengthens partnerships, and gives you a more complete understanding of the business of events.

For me, the CEM wasn’t a beginning or an end – it was a powerful next step.

Earning My CEM Certification Transformed My U.S. Events Career https://www.iaee.com/2025/08/25/earning-my-cem-certification-transformed-my-u-s-events-career/ Mon, 25 Aug 2025 14:00:30 +0000 https://www.iaee.com/?p=30937 IAEE is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its CEM Learning Program! Victoria Plotnikova thought her extensive European and Russian events background had prepared her for anything, until she entered the U.S. exhibitions and events market. Through her CEM certification journey, she gained transformative insights that revolutionized how she connects with clients and creates memorable trade show experiences.

By Victoria Plotnikova, CEM, CTSM | Account Executive | Expo Convention Contractors, Inc.

Earning my CEM certification has been one of the most enriching experiences of my professional journey.

Coming from a background rooted in the European and Russian events industry – including the honor of representing Russia at the World Expo in Shanghai – I believed I had a solid foundation. But stepping into the U.S. exhibitions and events landscape, I quickly realized how much more there was to discover. That moment of humility opened a new and exciting chapter for me.

The CEM Learning Program offered more than technical knowledge. It gave me clarity, structure, and a deep understanding of how the American market operates. Most importantly, it gave me a sense of belonging – among brilliant instructors, generous peers, and a community that truly values diverse perspectives.

Since earning my certification, I’ve been proud to continue my career as an Account Executive at Expo Convention Contractors, where I manage client relationships, oversee booth design and execution, and contribute to creating memorable trade show experiences. The CEM knowledge has empowered me to communicate more effectively with clients, navigate complex logistics, and drive results with confidence.

One of the most memorable and transformative sessions for me was the neuroscience-focused module. It opened my eyes to the psychology behind attendee behavior – how we process visual stimuli, why certain design elements trigger memory retention, and how booth environments can subconsciously influence engagement.

As someone who’s always been passionate about nonverbal communication, this session connected many dots for me. I learned how elements like posture, eye contact, spatial awareness, and even silence play critical roles in building trust and connection on the trade show floor. This understanding has helped me approach my clients and booth visitors with more intention and sensitivity – ensuring that our presence speaks clearly even before words are exchanged.

What I appreciated most about the program was the spirit of collaboration and the genuine passion that filled every session. It reminded me that learning isn’t about what you already know – it’s about curiosity, openness, and the courage to grow. It also confirmed that soft skills, like empathy and awareness, are just as essential as logistical expertise in this industry.

Today, I feel deeply honored to be part of the global CEM family – not only as an international professional but as someone who continues to evolve with every connection and every lesson. I’m especially grateful to IAEE for creating an educational environment that not only strengthens our professional toolkit but also nurtures our human side.

Thank you, IAEE, for lighting the path forward and making this milestone truly unforgettable.

My CEM was a Game Changer for Launching a Successful Trade Show https://www.iaee.com/2025/08/04/my-cem-was-a-game-changer-for-launching-a-successful-trade-show/ Mon, 04 Aug 2025 14:00:26 +0000 https://www.iaee.com/?p=30903 IAEE is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its CEM Learning Program! When Terry Dempsey left his established association management company after 17 years to launch a trade show in an untapped construction industry niche, he had little more than an idea and no guarantees. His CEM certification offered a game-changing foundation that filled critical knowledge gaps and provided the real-world tools he needed to create a profitable venture from the start.

By Terry Dempsey, CEM

Earning my CEM helped to propel a profitable pivot in my career.

It started when I was running an association management company (AMC) which had clients with good-sized trade shows and conventions. These threw off good money that then floated the other operations of the associations. We made money for our clients and a little bit for ourselves. And we became pretty darn good at producing these events.

As the owner and CEO I had a staff of specialists to manage the various aspects for our clients: shows, events and meetings, membership, publications, financial management, and normal overhead day-to-day functions.

Along the way, I decided to start a construction-industry trade show, convention, magazine, and association from scratch. I had stumbled on a multi-billion dollar industry segment that had none of the above. Of course I had the normal doubts, chief of which was why in the world hadn’t someone else seen this opportunity and jumped on it? Was there something hidden and toxic in this particular construction niche that all the big smart guys had sniffed out and run the other way leaving it to little old me to lose my shirt?

And then, as often happens, major things changed in my well-established successful AMC. I decided to get out of that business after about 17 years and move into a strictly trade show production model. At that point the idea for the new endeavors were just that – ideas and concepts that had been researched and kicked around with nothing yet off the ground. In retrospect, it sounds insane, but there you go. I had no ongoing source of cash flow as I had resigned our accounts and all of my people had found good jobs.

Now it was pretty much just me. Doing everything. I knew a fair amount about this world of event and trade show production from my almost two decades running the associations, but now it was going to be ME doing all the hands-on work. (Paid staff came along later after the first show when we had profits and cash-flow.) And that’s when the light-bulb went off and I joined then-named IAEM (International Association of Exhibition Management, now known as IAEE). After all, I was a firm believer and the product of the many benefits of being actively involved in my own industry associations – ASAE and GSAE (Georgia) and was a Certified Association Executive. I was, and still am, a huge believer in the power and benefits of associations and professional societies.

I immediately researched the CEM Learning Program and found that it would offer me a wealth of tools and fill in the gaps in my knowledge and operational skills. I stumbled onto a gold mine that helped enable me to launch a new trade show that was exceptionally well-received and profitable from the very first show. The magazine perfectly complemented the show as well as the new association that we had started and then turned over to the members to run.

I have told many people that there is absolutely no way that I would have been able to pull this trick off without a handful of things: the support of my wife, a bit of luck, a whole lot of hard work and sweat equity, the support of friends and family, access to the internet (this was 2002) and the real-world, nitty-gritty things that I learned from obtaining my CEM.

Here’s my advice to you. If you are reading this, you are making your living in the events and exhibitions world. You owe it to yourself to not only belong to YOUR industry association but also to pursue all the continuing education you can. You never know when things might change (and they eventually will). If you have ideas, research them well and then act if warranted. But stack the deck in your favor. Earning your CEM is the best way to do that. And then help teach others.

I am grateful to everyone listed above and particularly to those new friends and mentors I found in IAEM-IAEE, those people who willingly shared their knowledge and wisdom without reserve.

THANK YOU ALL.

By Kristie Chicki, CEM-AP  | Principal Project Manager | A2Z Events

My career in event management is fueled by a genuine love for bringing people together and a deep appreciation for the energy and effort that go into creating meaningful experiences. When I began my journey in the event world, there were few dedicated programs for event management, and the skills I developed were largely learned through experience and on-the-job training. From my first exposure to the world of trade shows, I was drawn to the high-energy atmosphere, the precision required to manage countless moving parts, and the human connections at the heart of every successful event. For me, it wasn’t just about logistics – it was about creating something memorable that would leave a lasting impression.

My professional journey began at William T. Glasgow, Inc., where I served as a Trade Show Manager. In this role, I supported major events, including the Billiard Congress of America Expo and the Automotive Aftermarket Products Expo (AAPEX). These early projects offered me a hands-on education in the dynamics of large-scale event coordination, vendor relationships, and multi-stakeholder collaboration. I quickly earned a reputation not only for my operational skill but also for my warmth, adaptability, and enthusiasm.

In 2005, I took a pivotal step by joining A2Z Events by Personify, a leader in event management software solutions. This transition expanded my reach and impact in the industry, enabling me to collaborate with a diverse range of associations and event professionals. As I advanced within the company, I took on leadership roles that spanned sales, client strategy, and product implementation. I led teams and partnered across departments to deliver solutions that made events more efficient and more engaging. At every stage, my focus remained the same: use technology to enhance – not replace – the human experience.

While I originally envisioned a career in Human Resources, I embraced the unexpected turn toward event management with curiosity and determination. Wanting to deepen my expertise, I pursued formal industry education. In 2019, I earned the Certified in Exhibition Management® (CEM) designation, followed by the prestigious CEM Advanced Professional (CEM-AP) in 2025. These achievements reflect not just my commitment to excellence but also my dedication to lifelong learning and mentoring others in the field.

Today, accredited universities offer dedicated event management programs that provide formal education and specialized training. I’m excited to see how the field has evolved, offering young professionals more structured pathways for advancement. However, I firmly believe that the professional certifications I earned – such as the Certified in Exhibition Management (CEM) in 2019, followed by the CEM-Advanced Professional (CEM-AP) designation in 2025 – remain crucial additions to any event professional’s portfolio. These certifications not only validate a deep level of expertise but also ensure that even in an ever-evolving industry, professionals like me remain on the cutting edge of trends, technology, and best practices.

For me, event management has always been more than just a career – it’s a calling. From my early days to my current leadership roles, my journey underscores the power of passion, dedication, and continuous growth in shaping the future of events.

Earning the Certified in Exhibition Management® (CEM) designation has been a defining achievement in my professional journey, especially in my role as National Account Director for Visit Atlantic City and the Atlantic City Convention Center. This credential not only deepened my expertise in the exhibitions and events industry, but it also strengthened my ability to strategically support our clients, partners, and stakeholders with a higher level of insight, professionalism, and service. The CEM has given me a more comprehensive understanding of what organizers and exhibitors truly need for successful events, and that knowledge has become a powerful asset in promoting Atlantic City as a world-class meetings and conventions destination.

The CEM coursework provided practical, real-world tools in key areas such as event operations, marketing, budgeting, risk management, and floor plan design. Applying these principles has allowed me to communicate more effectively with planners, anticipate potential challenges before they arise, and offer solutions that align with their goals. Whether I’m working with a first-time exhibitor or a seasoned trade show veteran, I’m able to demonstrate a deep understanding of their business, which fosters trust and builds long-lasting relationships.

From a destination marketing perspective, the CEM has elevated the way I represent Atlantic City. It has equipped me with the knowledge to showcase not only the benefits of our venues and infrastructure but also how we align with broader event strategies. I can speak the language of exhibition professionals and provide guidance that positions our city and our facilities as collaborative partners in their success. As a result, I’ve seen an increase in the number of meaningful conversations that convert into bookings and repeat business.

In addition, earning this designation has expanded my network within the global exhibitions and events community. I’ve connected with like-minded professionals who are equally passionate about our industry’s future. These relationships continue to offer inspiration, best practices, and shared insights that I bring back to my work in Atlantic City. This ongoing professional development ensures I stay ahead of trends and innovations that keep our destination competitive.

Ultimately, the CEM designation has reinforced my commitment to excellence in all aspects of my work. It’s a symbol of credibility that clients recognize and respect, and it has helped me grow both personally and professionally. I take pride in bringing that expertise to every interaction, and I’m grateful for how this journey has enhanced my ability to contribute meaningfully to the success of my clients and the continued growth of Atlantic City as a premier convention destination.

With a wealth of hands-on experience, Kate has developed a deep expertise in orchestrating seamless event experiences that maximize value for exhibitors, sponsors, and attendees alike.

Here, she shares how earning her CEM designation has validated her expertise as an entrepreneur and continues to inspire new ideas for her company.

How has the CEM designation helped in your career?

To me, the CEM designation demonstrates to peers, industry leaders, and potential clients that I am committed to my profession and dedicated to continually expanding my expertise.

Why is it important to maintain the CEM designation?

With the events industry constantly evolving – whether through new technologies, shifting attendee expectations, or emerging trends – it’s essential to stay ahead of the curve. My eagerness to expand my knowledge and implement best practices drives me to maintain my CEM designation. By doing so, I ensure that I’m not only staying up to date with the latest industry trends but also continuously refining my skills and strategies.

What made you want to obtain your CEM designation?

I chose to pursue the CEM designation because I hadn’t had formal training in the industry, and I wanted a structured environment to build my knowledge. What made the experience especially rewarding was the opportunity to learn directly from experienced professionals and peers who brought practical insight and depth to each topic.

What advice would you give to an aspiring individual who wants to apply for the CEM program?

Go for it – you never know where it could lead! The CEM program opens doors you didn’t even know were there. Whether it’s building confidence, expanding your industry knowledge, or connecting with professionals who inspire and challenge you, the experience is incredibly rewarding.

How did you start your career in this industry?

I got my start in this industry by happenstance. After being let go from a previous marketing role due to a franchise sale, I found myself at a crossroads. That’s when an unexpected opportunity in the trade show and events world landed in my lap. What I initially saw as a temporary pivot quickly grew into a passion.

I discovered a dynamic industry that challenged me creatively and strategically, and over time, I built deep experience, strong relationships, and a genuine love for the work. That journey ultimately led to the creation of my own company, Trade Show and Exhibition Solutions.

How have you made a difference with your show or with working with a client by applying the knowledge you gained by obtaining your CEM designation?

I really enjoy the open discussion forum; I start my morning everyday reading through what people posted. It gives me lots of new ideas to entertain and bring to the table.

What did you like most about the CEM Learning Program?

One of the most rewarding aspects of the CEM program for me was the opportunity to meet and connect with other industry professionals. Learning alongside peers who were just as passionate about exhibitions and events created a sense of community that I truly valued and continue to benefit from today.

What is one thing most people don’t know about you?

I am an artist. I am really busy with my twin 8-year-old daughters at the moment (lots of soccer), so there is not much time for that right now, but I do look forward to getting back into it once a bit more free time is available.

When I reflect on the journey that led me to where I am today in the exhibitions and events industry, one defining moment stands out: receiving the IAEE Bob Dallmeyer Education Fund grant in 2015. That grant wasn’t just a financial blessing, it was a spark that ignited a transformational journey through the CEM Learning Program that has forever changed my career, my confidence, and my commitment to this industry.

My very first CEM course was Floor Plan Development, taught by none other than B. Murphy, CEM. I walked into that class ready to absorb knowledge and walked out with much more: a mentor who would shape my professional path and become a constant source of encouragement, guidance, and inspiration. It was in that classroom that I realized this journey was going to be about more than just credentials. It was going to be about connection, growth, and community.

Completing the CEM designation marked a pivotal milestone for me. Not only did it validate my experience and deepen my events knowledge, but it also unlocked doors to new leadership opportunities. Shortly after earning my CEM, I had the honor of participating in the Krakoff Leadership Institute (now the IAEE Leadership Institute), another experience that expanded my perspective and helped me hone my voice as a leader in this industry.

But the journey didn’t stop there. Fueled by a desire to give back what I’d received, I became a CEM instructor myself. Standing on the other side of the classroom, I felt a deep responsibility to not only teach but also to uplift and inspire. I wanted to be for someone else what my mentor had been for me. Being a CEM instructor has allowed me to connect with professionals at all stages of their careers and support them in building their own pathways to success.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of meeting and working alongside some of the most incredible people in our industry. These relationships have been forged through shared learning, collaboration, and a mutual passion for creating impactful events. Today, I proudly serve on the IAEE Board and participate in several committees – both locally and nationally. Every role, every meeting, and every project reminds me of just how much this community has poured into me and how important it is to pay that forward.

The CEM Learning Program is more than just a credential, it’s a catalyst. It has given me the skills, strategic insight, and professional network to thrive in a competitive and ever-evolving industry. More importantly, it has given me a sense of purpose: to champion excellence, mentor the next generation, and contribute to the growth and integrity of the exhibitions and events space.

To anyone considering the CEM journey… take the leap! Whether you’re just starting out or a seasoned professional looking to grow, this program can be the bridge between where you are and where you’re destined to go. It certainly was for me.

Happy 50th anniversary to the CEM Learning Program. Here’s to the next generation of leaders, learners, and legacy-builders!

Karen Kroll, CMP, CEM, DES, Director of Exhibits for PRINTING United Alliance, has more than 15 years of experience in the meetings and exhibitions industry, and specializes in creating impactful, engaging trade show experiences. With a strong background in exhibit strategy, floor plan design, client and customer service and logistics, she applies a blend of creativity and operational know-how to every project.

Karen is passionate about building relationships and delivering seamless, high-value events that connect people and ideas. Here, she shares how her Certified in Exhibition Management (CEM) designation has transformed her approach to exhibition strategy and elevated her career in the competitive events industry.

How has the CEM designation helped in your career?

Not only has it deepened my understanding of core principles like strategic planning, event operations and marketing, but it has also provided me with a global perspective on industry best practices.

Why is it important to maintain the CEM designation?

Our field is constantly evolving – whether it’s through advancements in technology, shifts in attendee behavior, or new safety and sustainability standards. Staying certified ensures I remain current with best practices and emerging trends.

What made you want to obtain your CEM designation?

Being part of the CEM community means I am constantly learning from seasoned professionals and staying ahead of trends. It’s been a key driver in both my professional development and my passion for the industry.

What advice would you give to an aspiring individual who wants to apply for the CEM program?

My biggest advice for anyone considering the CEM program is: go for it – but go in with intention. The CEM is more than just a credential; it’s an investment in your career growth and professional identity within the exhibitions and events industry.

How did you start your career in this industry?

Ironically, I started on the career path outside of the exhibit hall in logistics and operations. I always said, I could not see myself working inside the hall. My employer kind of threw me in there for a client and I fell in love and have never looked back. I reverted back to my days as a teacher.

How have you made a difference with your show or with working with a client by applying the knowledge you gained by obtaining your CEM designation?

Earning my CEM designation gives me a more strategic and holistic understanding of show and expo management, which directly influences the way I approach both events and client relationships. Thanks to the knowledge I gained from the CEM program – particularly in modules focused on event marketing, floor plan development and ROI measurement – I look forward to bringing a new level of excellence to our events.

What was it that you did or implemented right after obtaining your CEM?

Right after obtaining my CEM, one of the first things I focused on was re-evaluating our floor policies and procedures to ensure they aligned with industry best practices and enhanced both safety and exhibitor experience. I noticed that some of our existing policies – especially around move-in/move-out procedures and booth activity – were either outdated or inconsistently enforced.

What did you like most about the CEM Learning Program?

What I value most is how practical and immediately applicable the content is – especially in areas like floor plan management, marketing and operational procedures. The program’s flexibility, expert instructors and strong global community are worth their weight in gold. Maintaining my designation keeps me current, credible and committed to industry best practices.

What is one thing most people don’t know about you?

I had perfect attendance in school up until 9th grade. 😊

By Laura Purdy, CEM, CMM | General Manager | Exhibition Place

Back in 2006, the Canadian Association of Exposition Management (CAEM) offered the Certified in Exhibition Management® (CEM) Learning Program through its affiliation with IAEE. I registered in one of the first groups, together with some of my sales team, to take the CEM Learning Program with a view to expanding my knowledge of the industry so that I could better understand our customers’ requirements, and tailor our service delivery to both meet and exceed their needs.

At the time I held the position of Director, Sales and Marketing and felt that a comprehensive knowledge of our clients’ planning process would assist our sellers in performing better site inspections, and more comprehensive sales proposals and prospecting. The courses offered over the next couple of years expanded my knowledgebase, and I had the opportunity to participate with some of our clients and suppliers, expanding my community of industry professionals across Canada and the U.S.

I felt very strongly that that the education offered through the CEM Learning Program was an important step in the growth of the industry in Canada, and I then volunteered to sit on the CEM Committee at CAEM and promote the program. This committee was an opportunity for me to become more involved in CAEM, and subsequently I joined the Finance Committee and from there, became a Board member of CAEM.

My committee and board experience has expanded to include board and executive committee roles for Meetings Mean Business Canada, Convention Centres of Canada and UFI. Many of these experiences span over my career stem from the valuable education and thought leadership I gained through initially obtaining my CEM designation and becoming involved in industry volunteerism.

Now, as General Manager of Exhibition Place (Enercare Centre), I influence my team on the benefits of earning their CEM designation. I am proud to say that fundamental to every employee’s onboarding and continuing education, obtaining their CEM designation factors in prominently.  I have expanded the opportunity to earn the CEM designation to include our Sales, Event Services, Facility Services, Accounting, Transportation and Production Services teams at Exhibition Place, and presently have 24 staff who are in the process of, or have received, their CEM designation.

For me there is nothing quite like the joy of supporting others on their journeys – it’s truly unmatched by the world of events.”

In the spirit of sharing knowledge, Kara shares six tips she considers some of the most important advice for fellow exhibitions and events professionals.

Tip #1: Be Curious

This allows for creativity and the open-minded thinking that you will need when planning events. Curiosity should be an essential trait for event professionals – it will naturally encourage you to stay on top of what is trending and get a look at what might be coming around the corner before anyone else. This curiosity will enable you not only meet but exceed your client’s expectations and deliver on the promise of success; for example, by creating unexpected and engaging experiences that well and truly captivate your audience and leave them looking forward to your next event.

Tip #2: Put Others First

Simply put, this is a brilliant growth strategy. When dealing with venues, suppliers, and teammates, actively listen and put their ideas forward before yours. This is less about kindness and more about allowing yourself to be open to others’ ideas and suggestions. Use all the tools at your disposal to gather and incorporate feedback, blend diverse interests and ensure accessibility to create events that not only meet the requirements as outlined, but reward attendees with a sense of delight and surprise as they take part in an event that feels custom-made just for them.

Tip #3: Never Stop Learning

It doesn’t matter if you’re new to the business or a seasoned pro, we should always cultivate a passion for learning which is one of the important ways how we grow. Whether you join small, curated lunch discussions or attend annual conferences, read books or take classes, continuous learning will enrich and deepen your knowledge base, keep you current on new trends and enhance your overall experience. Learning isn’t just a way to add credentials to your CV, it keeps mind and skills sharp and opens the doors to leadership opportunities and personal development.

Tip #4: Mentor and Mentee

Mentorships are such an important part of the event planning industry, and one of the main channels through which knowledge is passed on from generation to generation. The best mentorship programs are built around a structure that outlines duration, frequency of interactions and expectations, as well as clear guidelines set goals. And don’t just take someone under your own wing, one of the best ways to further and expand your own base of knowledge is to reach out and ask for someone else to show you their way to acquire new skills and broaden your diversity.

Tip #5: Build Your Network, Purposefully

This is a surefire way to enable you and your business to develop resiliency when faced with challenges and adversity, and to ignite new opportunities and attract new business leads. From seeking out people who are different from you in career path and industry, to obtaining and sharing advice, finding solutions and attracting sponsors, networking is like a magical glue that brings good things together. Networking is also a great way to further your learning as well – attend conferences with a student mindset and find insights that you can then use for personal and professional growth as well as becoming a beacon of learning for others as well.

Tip #6: Be a Connector

One of the most important things we can do as event professionals is to serve our industry by connecting people to others. A connector is the social equivalent of a computer network hub and will help create valuable liaisons across a wide array of social, professional, cultural and economic circles. As a connector, not only do you help others create touch points, but you in turn will reap the benefits as well when people you have connected to will in turn keep you in mind for opportunities and future contacts. As a connector, your mindset should be keyed to thinking about others first without any expectations for anything in return as this aspect of networking is about building relationships and growing a stronger and more engages network.
